Luckily, our favourite builders, Luke & Shaun from Living Space, are setting the record straight. Here are their top 5 tips to avoid a bathroom renovation disaster.
- When it comes to the bathroom, more is definitely more – space-wise, anyway. Look at your wish list carefully: a double shower, double vanity, freestanding bath, laundry, linen press, built-in laundry basket and a bookshelf with a wall-hung TV could mean there’s no room left for you.
- There’s a definite trend towards ‘wet room’ design – a layout with minimal storage and fixtures, where there is no shower screen at all or a simple full-length glass panel. The ‘wet room’ design certainly maximises space, but it also increases the chance of water splashes. And, practically speaking, there’s nothing worse than soaking your fresh socks every morning!
- It’s easy to see the appeal of a minimalist design, and clutter free bathroom with just the basics taking centre stage; especially when it looks so sleek and stylish in a showroom. But remember, within the first week of use, the reality is you’ll need to find a way to not highlight all of your embarrassing ailments to your friends and family.
- Think long term as the average lifespan of a bathroom is 10 years or more – anticipating your future needs can save you money in the long run. Before you ditch the bath think, is the pitter patter of tiny feet in your future? If so, you don’t want to be bending over a laundry tub with a slippery baby. Or if not you, consider future buyers.
- Prepare for chaos – it’s inevitable. The bathroom is one of the most used rooms in the house and the hardest to live without. At the start of a renovation, most people are overly ambitious about what they can tolerate. We can’t stress this enough; if you only have one bathroom, make other plans – seriously, don’t even try! If you have a second bathroom, having a plan to deal with extra people (especially if it’s an ensuite) will go a long way towards reducing the renovation stress.
